Jim Hutchinson Sr.

Jim Hutchinson Sr. is a transplant from the New Jersey shore now living in St. James City. He grew up on an island and spent his childhood fishing, crabbing, clamming, and spending much of his waking hours on the water. An English major at Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, he also played football and baseball.

He is now partially retired after a long career in public education as an English and Latin teacher, head football and baseball coach, and athletic director. Using his English and fishing background, he is a free-lance writer for several newspapers and magazines along with a weekly outdoors column for the Times-Beacon newspapers in Manahawkin, NJ. After enjoying “Nautical Mile” publications for several years, he wants to share some of his experiences as a northerner learning how to fish “Florida style.”

In addition he also finds time to give fishing seminars at boat shows and fishing clubs, do cable shows on fishing and seafood cooking, and teach seafood cooking at an adult school-all in New Jersey. While growing up he earned much of the funds for his educational expenses clamming and crabbing.

He estimates he currently spends over 100 days a year on the water in New Jersey and Florida. His son Jim Hutchinson Jr. served as the managing director for the Recreational Fishing Alliance, a national lobbying organization for recreational anglers for several years and is now editor of the New Jersey/New York edition of The Fisherman magazine.
